Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek

Sagarmatha National Park

  • It’s a wonderful trek that offers the views of most of the highlights of the Sagarmatha National Park and in addition we visit Ama Dablam Base Camp. All in two days less than what it would takes to go all the way to Everest Base Camp.
  • Visit of the Ama Dablam Base Camp where expeditions prepare the ascent to the peak.
  • Stay one night in Upper Pangboche, where there is the oldest Buddhist Monastery in the Solukhumbu Area.
  • Visit Tengboche Monastery, one of the highest Buddhist Monastery in the world and one of the main Monasteries for the Sherpa community.
  • Part of the trek leaves behind the crowded areas of Everest region. Ama Dablam Base Camp is a less popular trek that maintains the same astonishing views of the great Everest Himalaya Range.
  • Great views of Mount Everest along the way from various points.
  • Sherpa Cooking class during the acclimatisation day in Namche Bazar optional.
  • Visit of Khumjung village and the school of the region supported by Edmund Hillary Foundation.

This is one of the greatest option for a shorter trek to get to know some of the essence and nature of the Sagarmatha National Park. Enter and meet the wonderful soul of the land of the Sherpas.

We will be visiting some important villages of the Sherpa community (Namche Bazar, Khumjung, Tengboche, Upper Pangboche…) where culture and tradition are still vibrant and strong. You will get astonished by the beauty of the Buddhist architecture and the art of the Monasteries along the path.

We will get to the foot of the Ama Dablam mountain. For the locals, the form of this mountain bear resemblance to the skull of the Yeti. You will get to a very special place that holds a unique vibration. And on top of this, you will get away from the busy trails of the classic Everest region treks.

Trek in the shadows of the Yeti still present amongst the legends of the locals. Mingle in the Sherpa culture as you walk through the nature of the Himalayas. Let yourself go and discover the living rocks, and enjoy the flora and fauna in one of the most astonishing Nepal treks you will ever do in your life…

During the acclimatization days, we organize different activities you can choose from, amongst them our Special Sherpa Cooking Class conducted by our family in Namche Bazar.

Check our Trip Schedule below this page for more details.

03Day Three: Fly from Kathmandu (1400m) to Lukla (2840m) and walk to Monjo (2835m) / Time: 5 to 6 hours

We will wake up very early (around 04:30am) to be at the airport first thing in the morning and take the domestic flight to Lukla (2800m), where the trek starts. Be prepared for a true adventure flying with a small aircraft with astonishing views of the Himalayas on the left of the aircraft, and the infinite hills covered by rice field terraces on the left. Once we land we start trekking. We will stop to recharge batteries and have some food in Phakding. Our last destination will be Monjo, the last village before entering the Sagarmatha National Park. On our arrival to Monjo, we will be able to explore the village and check the Monastery and the School, and have our first Sherpa dinner. This time we sleep in a high altitude mountain lodge! The adventure has just started...

04Day Four: Monjo to Namche Bazar (3440m) / Time: 4 to 5 hours

During this journey we will be able to have the first views of Mount Everest just before arriving to Namche Bazar. This will be a short day trek, around 3 to 4 hours. The last 2 hours we will face a steep terrain after crossing one of the highest suspension bridge of the region to arrive to Namche Bazar. We will have time to walk around the village, taste delicious sweet caprices at the German Bakery, enjoy the paintings and the handicraft around the village or play pool at the bar!

05Day Five: Namche Bazar acclimatization day. Khumjung (3780m) / Time: 4 to 5 hours.

We will spend the day doing some treks and activities to explore the area and get immersed in the culture. A variety of options are available. Some of our favourite ones; trek to Everest View Hotel, astonishing trek with the best views of the range of Everest: Nuptse, Lhotse, Everest, Annapurna… Visit Khumjung, just at the bottom of Mount Khumbila (the sacred mountain). We see the Edmund Hillary Foundation school and come back through Yak farms. On our arrival back to Namche Bazar, we can enjoy a good movie or documentary at the coffee shop, or if you prefer, we have available a Sherpa Cooking Class* special for you!(*no costs incurred for any of the activities mentioned).

06Day Six: Namche Bazar to Deboche (3820m) (via Tengboche 3860m) / Time: 6 to 7 hours

After a nice flattish walk through a wide path for about an hour, we will descend to the Dudh Kosi river and cross a suspension bridge to go up again through a steep terrain for about 2 hours to arrive to the paradise called Tengboche; one of the highest Buddhist Monastery in the world. We sleep in Deboche, 20 min away from Tengboche downhill, to find more comfortable shelter. Due to the exposure of Tengboche location (on the very top of a hill), the winds can be more uncomfortable for our stay.

07Day Seven: Deboche to Mingbo (4600m) / Time: 5 to 6 hours

Today we will leave the main trekking trail towards Mingbo, where we walk through the meadows and Yak pastures. We cross the Dudh river to Pangboche side to cross it back again and start climbing up following the trail and the ridgeline up to Mingbo.

08Day Eight: Mingbo to Upper Pangboche (3930m) (Ama Dablam Base Camp visit) / Time: 5 to 6 hours

From Mingbo will take a short walk of about 40 minutes to visit Ama Dablam Base Camp. The trail is isolated and has one of the best and most stunning views of the Sagarmatha Himalayan mountains. During October and November is the high season for climbers to summit the Ama Dablam and we can find a city of tents in the Base Camp. After our visit to Ama Dablam, we will head down to Pangboche and we will stay at the old village a bit up the hill. This part of the village is less crowded with tourists; a typically Sherpa village with traditional houses and lifstyle. We will be able to see the oldest Buddhist Monastery in the region.

09Day Nine: Upper Pangboche to Phortse (3810m) / Time: 4 to 5 hours

The views from Phortse will give you another prospective of the valley. On top of an isolated hill, surrounded by the two main valleys that go to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes. The trek will take us through narrow paths and will be a gift for our eyes with Tengboche Monastery panorama at the other side of the river. Phortse it's a less crowded village with traditional lifestyle and only few lodges.

010Day Ten: Phortse to Namche Bazar / Time: 5 to 6 hours

We return to Namche Bazar by starting our walk descending to the Dudh river to cross it. We then have some steep terrain to get to a flattish long walk to the top of Namche Bazar.

011Day Thirteen: Namche Bazar to Lukla / Time: 6 to 7 hours

We will say good bye to Namche, not before a well deserved farewell in the German Bakery for the best coffee and the delicious sweet artisan biscuits. Lukla will be our last stop before taking the flight back to Kathmandu the next day.

012Day Fourteen: Lukla to Kathmandu

The flight will leave early in the morning*(see note above the map). And after landed in Kathmandu, our transport will drop you off at the Hotel in Kathmandu. The rest of the day is for you to rest and to enjoy the city! We will be available to do recommendations or help you in anything you need. If you wish, you can request a Guided Tour through the city if you haven't done it on the second day of your stay in Kathmandu.
